The Battle Within

May 17, 2020    RD McClenagan

RD shares that it's easy to feel like there's a Jekyll and Hyde in us; we don't always feel like the new creation we are told we are in Christ. He adds that we can act as if we have the opposite of the Fruits of the Spirit in us. But Paul shows in the text, RD tells us, that the problem here is not the law, but us. Our flesh (meaning the old you before Christ, the part of you that is a Pharisee who is still trying to earn your salvation) is still a part of us, RD explains. Our flesh and sin are not our masters, but they still live in our house. So what is the solution? RD conveys that religion would tell us that the solution is earning our salvation ourselves by perfectly obeying the law. But RD shows us that we are dependent on Jesus, not the law; Jesus is our only solution. RD closes with two examples: His daughter Lela learning to walk as an example of what it's like to learn to walk with Christ, and the movie "Hook" which shows us what it's like when Jesus calls out our true selves like the Lost Boy calling out the real Peter.
