Slaves to Righteousness

May 3, 2020    Greg Pinkner

Greg teaches on Romans 6: 15-23, where he talks about being a slave to righteousness. He starts by showing that everyone who has ever been born or ever will be born has sinned, starting with Adam and Eve, who disobeyed God's commandment to them. Paul's question in the text, Greg tells us, is how did those between Adam and Moses commit a sin if God did not issue commandments during that time. But through the text, Paul proves that we are either a slave to sin, or a slave to righteousness; there is no in between or exceptions. To come to God, Greg announces, is to change masters, from sin to Christ. In the same way that Adam's sin counts for everyone, Greg asserts, Christ's death counts as an atonement for everyone. Finally, Greg shows that the text tells us that the free gift of Christ's death comes with consequences (Greg discloses that "consequences" in this context is a good thing) - the gift requires us to use our new master, Christ, to live a new life of righteousness.
